Zinsco Electrical Panel Hazards
Zinsco or Zinsco-Sylvania panels were once a popular choice for electrical installations across North America until design flaws led to serious safety concerns. The panels, featuring aluminum bus bars, are prone to corrosion and overheating, especially under increased energy demands.
One of the critical issues arises when breakers fail to trip properly, allowing power surges that can lead to fires and electrical shocks. Worse still, the panels may continue to conduct power even when breakers appear to be off, posing a significant hazard.
Other panels from the same era haven't shown the same failure rates, suggesting specific issues unique to Zinsco panels. Additionally, there are doubts about the accuracy of the testing data provided to Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for listing.
Experts recommend replacing Zinsco panels due to these safety risks, even if a technician suggests repairs. Safety standards have evolved, making older panels like Zinsco's obsolete in terms of modern safety requirements.
